The electrodes are subjected to strong mechanical stress through the charging and discharging of the Li-Ion Batteries. This results in metal particles breaking off and interrupting the ion stream. Repeated over a period of time, this reduces the number of ions, which can be used to store energy (see fig. 1-3).
